# Pennsylvania state sales tax rate

Canonical: https://olympus.new-odyssey.com/data/sales-tax-jurisdiction/pa-state-42

Pennsylvania's state sales and use tax rate is 6% (general rate, intrastate sales) on 2026-10-23 (effective 2026-01-01), from the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue's published rates (rates-PA-2026-10-21).

A published rate is not the tax due on a sale: taxability, sourcing, nexus and exemptions all change what is owed.

Notes:

- These are published sales and use tax rates by jurisdiction. They are not the tax due on a transaction and not a taxability determination: whether an item is taxable, which location's rate applies (sourcing), whether the seller must collect (nexus) and any exemption all change what is owed. Rates come from the Streamlined Sales Tax files the states publish or, where a result's source says so, from the state revenue department's own files and pages; confirm with the state before relying on them.
- Pennsylvania: 6% state rate plus 1% in Allegheny County and 2% in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania Department of Revenue). Act 21 of 2026 sources these local taxes to the delivery location for tax years after December 31, 2025; the Department enforces it from October 1, 2026. The county comes from Census boundaries.
- Boundary from Census, rate from the state: the county (or state) was found from the ZIP's Census 2020 ZIP Code Tabulation Area, not from the state. ZCTAs approximate USPS ZIP areas; a ZIP that crosses a county line returns one candidate per county set with its land share, and PO-box or unique ZIPs have no ZCTA. Confirm the county for an address near a county line.
