Answer · US SEC Filings & Financial Data API

Is there an API for SEC EDGAR filings and XBRL financials?

Yes: the SEC's own EDGAR APIs on data.sec.gov return each company's filing history and every XBRL fact it filed as JSON, free and without an API key, at up to 10 requests a second with a declared User-Agent. What they return is each fact as the company tagged it, so the same line item can sit under different concepts from one company to the next. The Olympus US SEC Filings & Financial Data API maps those facts to eight standardised metrics (revenue, net income, total assets and five more) with annual and quarterly history, restatement flags and comparison: GET /v1/sec/companies/{cik}/financials.

The official route, and what it lacks

  • The EDGAR APIs. data.sec.gov/submissions/CIK##########.json (filing history), /api/xbrl/companyconcept/... (one concept for one company), /api/xbrl/companyfacts/CIK##########.json (every concept for one company) and /api/xbrl/frames/... (one concept across companies for a period). The SEC says: "These APIs do not require any authentication or API keys to access."
  • Updates. "The APIs are updated in real-time as filings are disseminated", and the bulk archive zip files "are recompiled nightly".
  • Fair access. "Current max request rate: 10 requests/second", with a User-Agent header that declares who you are.
  • Free. "Anyone can access and download this information for free."

What that leaves to you: companyfacts "returns all the company concepts data for a company", exactly as filed. Choosing which concept is revenue for each company, separating annual from quarterly values, spotting restatements and resolving tickers or EINs to CIKs is your code's job. There is no endpoint for "revenue for these five companies, last ten years".

What the US SEC Filings & Financial Data API serves

SEC EDGAR companies by CIK, ticker or EIN, 10-K / 10-Q filing metadata and eight standardised XBRL financial metrics with annual and quarterly history and comparison.

Limits

  • Values are as filed in XBRL: nothing is estimated, derived or corrected.
  • Metrics: revenue, net_income, total_assets, total_liabilities, stockholders_equity, operating_cash_flow, eps_diluted, shares_outstanding.
  • Quarterly operating cash flow is usually year-to-date (is_ytd: true).
  • A ticker can map to more than one CIK during a reorganisation; ticker search returns every match.

Not included: real-time streams; full-text filing search; insider trading; ownership; recommendations.

The value is Apple's fiscal 2024 revenue as filed in its 10-K, with the XBRL concept it was tagged with, the accession number and a link to the filing index. GET /v1/sec/companies/search?ticker=AAPL resolves a ticker to a CIK (ein= resolves an EIN), and GET /v1/sec/financials/compare lines one metric up across companies.
